Oral thrush is a non-contagious fungal or yeast infection of the mouth caused by the overgrowth of Candida fungus. It is also called oral candidosis (or candiasis) because it is caused by a group of yeasts called Candida. Thrush may appear as white or pale yellow spots on the inner surfaces of the mouth and throat, the roof of tongue, and the lips. It may look like cottage cheese or milk curds.
Symptoms of oral thrush can include
- White patches (plaques) in the mouth that can often be wiped off, leaving behind red areas that may bleed slightly
- Loss of taste or an unpleasant taste in the mouth
- Redness inside the mouth and throat
- Cracks at the corners of the mouth
- A painful, burning sensation on the tongue or around the lesions
- Can affect the ability to swallow, speak, and eat
Usually oral thrush is not contagious but if a baby is having oral thrush and is breastfeeding, they can pass on thrush, which can cause a nipple infection. This kind of infection causes inflamed, sensitive and cracked nipples.
Homeopathic Remedies for Oral Thrush
Borax
Borax is indicated when there is aphthae along with white fungus patches on the tongue and inside of the cheek. Mouth feels hot and tender on the touching. The thrush ulcers bleed easily on touch and eating. There is a bitter taste in the mouth. Some people also complain about having a taste of “cellar mold”
Mercurius Solublis
Mercurius Solublis is a very effective treatment for thrush when there is copious amount of saliva along with thrush patches with the mercurial odor. Tongue and the mucus membranes of the mouth appear flabby and spongy. There is thick yellow moist coating on the tongue along with sore gums.
Nitric Acidum
Nitric Acidum is an excellent remedy for oral thrush with severe pain. There is usually an offensive smell from the mouth. Ulcerated spots on the inner surface of cheeks hurt like a sticking splinter. Tongue is clean with patches in the center and is very sensitive as even mild food causes a smarting sensation. Mouth is very dry and the corners of the mouth are ulcerated.
