I’ve been hearing a lot about canker sores, or aphthous ulcers lately. Canker sores, or aphthous ulcers, are round ulcers that develop inside your mouth’s soft tissue and are the leading cause of mouth ulcers in children. These can be very painful and can make eating or drinking uncomfortable. Canker sores usually appear as round, painful open sores that have a white or yellowish coating and a red “halo” around them.
Canker sores are not that same as fever blisters, which usually occur on the lips and corners of the mouth.
Causes of Canker sores, or aphthous ulcers
- A mouth injury
- Certain viruses and illnesses
- Stress
- Certain medicines
- Deficiency of folic acid, vitamin B12, and iron
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), an ingredient in many toothpastes and mouthwashes
- Emotional Stress
Recurring mouth ulcers can be treated using homeopathy. Depending on the cause behind the ulcers, the treatment has to be targeted. Here are few common remedies to help canker sores acutely.
Borax
The ulcers appear in the mouth and on the inner surface of the cheeks. There is a tendency to bleed easily when touched, or during eating.
